Yearning for a different way of life

Its probably fair to say that I have never enjoyed my day job when I was there. The closest I got with being happy at work was at my last job and that wasn’t because of the job – it was the people that made it for me. I have always wanted to run my own business, be my own boss, have the flexibility of managing my own hours and being able to work from home.

I’ve had multiple ideas in the past of how I could go about doing this: ranging from making handmade cards and bath bombs to being a professional organiser to running a party-planning business to being in a semi-professional Blondie Tribute band. And more.
My most recent plan/idea is two fold. 1) to make more money from my blog and 2) to learn how to become a social media manager freelance.
Now, option 1 is something I’m already doing. I recently had a sponsored post which paid me a decent amount of money (if you saw that and thought it wasn’t very me, sorry – I need the cash but I won’t make those kind of posts regular). I also need to look into advertising and affiliate marketing. I don’t really know what the deal is with this but I know I need to spend some time to figure out if this could give me a monthly income.
Option 2) to become a social media manager, or marketer – there are many titles for what is basically the same thing – this is something I am pretty serious about, even though the idea only came to me after Britmums Live last weekend. The basic premise is that you support companies in their media campaigns. Managing their tweets/posts and growing them followers. I believe there is a lot more to it than that so I need to do some research to find out if I am right for that role. It would not be something I could just start doing and immediately drop my day job. I’m realistic about that. I would need to grow my business and clientelle. But I am passionate about social media and its uses. Sadly I missed the “How to be a social media manager” session at Britmums Live which I am now kicking myself about. If anyone has notes from that session or knows if there are slides available for download please let me know. I have been looking at articles online and have found a couple of courses that I could do to improve my skills. But I can really see myself doing this.
Does anyone else out there feel like this? Are you aching to be your own boss but not figured out how to do it yet? Alternatively, are you your own boss already? How long have you been doing it? Do you have any advise for me?

Please comment so I know I'm not alone out here!
