Tuesday 24th March: Springfield Illinois & Abraham Lincoln Museum

We arrived in Springfield late Monday night. We drove past our very first giant of the trip so we pulled over and took a photo! The kids were fast asleep so they missed it sadly.

The next day, Tuesday, we headed out into Springfield to have an explore around and go to the Abraham Lincoln museum. The kids were pretty well behaved. Lala had me read some of the information on the plaques by each of the displays. We had to explain to them both about slavery and the civil war. We watched a 4 minute map of the war territories and the numbers of casualties. There was also a theatre bit where you learnt about the Lincoln Library where there were holographic “ghosts” which helped to illustrate the story they were telling.

There was a kids play area too where Josh built a really cool house out of old-fashioned wooden building sticks/bricks.

After the Lincoln Museum we walked back to the car and headed back to the hotel via a Cosy Dog Drive In (for Ben) and a Taco Bell (for me) – the kids are Ben’s fries and some of the hot dogs (had to scrape off the corn batter).

Once back at the hotel, we are our multi-place feasts and around 8pm settled the kids into bed and then went to the table and chairs just outside the room so we could keep an eye on the door. I spent the time typing up the last few posts and drinking cans of beer. And taking it in turns to nip outside for a ciggie.

Suffice to say that this morning I had a bit of a sore head.

Please comment so I know I'm not alone out here!
