A fab break away in Devon

Last week I took the kids away to Devon for 3 days.

We drove down (or up?) on Monday morning. It was a 3 hour drive but I really enjoy driving and the kids behaved themselves and Biscuit slept most of the way.

We stayed in a little air bnb place in a town called Barnstaple. It was small but enough for our needs. It had a bedroom, and a living area with a sofa bed and a small kitchenette. I gave the bedroom to the kids and took the sofa bed myself so that I had somewhere to relax in the evenings. This is the place we stayed at. I would highly recommend it and the owner was very nice and accommodating.

When we got there we had a bit of time to relax and then went on a little walk around the area.

After a rest, we went out for dinner at a local fish and chip restaurant called The Pelican. The food was really good and the staff very friendly. I can definitely recommend it.

On Tuesday morning we headed to Saunton Sands beach where the kids and Biscuit ran around to their hearts content.

After the kids were tired and Biscuit a little wet and cold, we went to get ice cream at the shop on the beach! Even Biscuit got an icecream. A plain icecream with a doggy biscuit instead of a flake. I forgot to take a picture of that, but here is my ice cream.

After the beach we decided to head a bit of a way away to go see Okehampton Castle. It was about an hour and 20 minutes away so a bit of a drive but it was definitely worth it. Lovely place to walk around and it is dog friendly too.

On the drive back from Okehampton Castle, we started to feel a little hungry and thirsty so we stopped in a little village called South Molton and I pulled over and asked an elderly lady where would be a nice place and she recommended the Corn Dolly and pointed us in the right direction. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. They are child friendly (I didn’t feel guilty about my usually unruly children) they are dog friendly and the cakes are just DELICIOUS!!! They made us feel so welcome and definitely quenched our hunger and thirst!

We were pretty tired after getting home so had a couple of hours downtime and then headed out to a local pub for dinner. I can’t remember the name of the pub. The food was good, although I ordered nachos and was a little disappointed with them (and with myself for ordering that instead of something warm and filling like sausages and mash or a burger).

On Wednesday once we’d all got up, I packed up our things and we got ready for the drive home, with a stop along the way. We went to a place called the House of Marbles in Taunton. This place is owned by a very good friend of my dad and I used to go there as a kid. We had lunch with my dad’s friend and his wife which was very nice (although the kids behaviour was not brilliant but that’s a story for another blog post I think) and then we had a good look around the shops and I bought the kids some souvenirs.

The reminder of the journey home felt like a long way – 2 hours and 40 minutes and I stupidly tried to do it without stopping. The kids and Biscuit the dog slept some of the way but towards the end of the journey (the last half hour or so) everyone started getting very restless. I was so relieved when we finally arrived home.

Overall, we had a brilliant time and I’m so glad we did it. And I’m really proud of myself for doing it all on my own. It was just the break we all needed – but me in particular!

When I got home I ordered some magnets from an app called Lalalabs. I’ve now put them on my fridge to remind me of our trip! So pleased with them. If you might want to order some yourself, please use my referral code: PGQVNPPS. I will get £5 credit and you will get the same off your first order.

  1. Devon is absolutely beautiful! I’m glad you had such a fabulous time. I’m actually thinking about moving to that part of the country – I think having access to such beautiful outdoor space is amazing, especially for young kids. And the fresh air would be such a great change from city life. Not to mention, the weather can be pretty good!

Please comment so I know I'm not alone out here!
